"Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels" has many violent moments, but they all have a black comedy undertone. Ritchie is often compared to Quentin Tarantino, but note that while Tarantino always focuses on cinematic perfection, Ritchie's focus is entertainment - and it IS entertaining, but on a high level. Like its more popular follow-up, "Sn*tch", also this one here will not be every one's cup of tea, but it is a clear recommendation for everybody who enjoys good gangster flicks with humorous aspects, and if you liked "Pulp Fiction" or "Trainspotting", this is a suggestion. "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" is a sharp-witted gangster comedy with much exploitation, dark humour and memorable characters. It is very sad Guy Ritchie is mostly known for either being Madonna's ex, or for having won the Razzie Award for "Swept Away", when seeing he can also do a movie like this. "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" is a gangster comedy by Guy Ritchie released in 1998. I would only recommend it to people aged 14 and over due to the nudity and language in this film. Overall, this film wasn’t entirely bad, but it was boring and was very disappointing for me personally. There is a soft comedic tone that softens the impact of this though.Ħ.5/10 Drugs - A weed farm is shown and characters smoke and drink alcohol, in one scene for the sole purpose of getting drunk. The aftermath of these shootings are seen, and in one scene a man’s foot has been quite badly injured with his shoe being covered in blood.Ħ/10 Themes - Quite a serious movie with many scenes of peril. There is also a scene shot in a strip club and some crude remarks are made by characters.Ħ.5/10 Nudity - Dildos are seen, a woman’s breasts are seen in the background of a relatively long scene set in a strip club and in a very brief shot you can see a photo of a topless, possibly fully nude woman.ħ.5/10 Violence - Many people are shot throughout the film, with blood coming out of them. Now that I’m done with my movie review, I’ll move on to my content review:ĥ.5/10 Sex - A man owns a sex shop where you can see many toys lying on his desk table. It’s hard to convey how bad it is, and it’s the fact that it’s so blatantly obvious that really makes me wonder what they were thinking when they shooting the film. Also, in some scenes of the film, you could CLEARLY see that some of the punches made by characters didn’t make contact to other characters as there is a terribly large gap between their fist and the person they are attacking. This severely clashes with their attributes and makes the characters lose their plausibility. They seem to just shrug it off and continue with life. For example, somehow, when a man loses 500k in a poker game, 2/3 of his friends don’t even seem bothered. The characters never feel that real, and respond to some situations so strangely that you feel as if you can’t connect with them. But this film is very dated and it shows. Also, the ending of the film was definitely its strong point and managed to make me enjoy it a little bit. It still had some good action bits and managed to create good tension, suspense and thrill at some points. I mean it’s not like every single aspect of this film was horrible, it was just that most of the time it was boring. Despite the movies run length of about 1 hour and 45 minutes, I felt like it was well over 2 hours, maybe even 2 and a half hours. This was certainly a moment where I felt like I had wasted my time, and I have never felt that way with a movie before. I left the film very disappointed, and slightly angry at myself for sticking with it. There were many moments where I was hoping for the film to get better, but it never did. Unfortunately, my high expectations for this film were not met to even the slightest degree. This was due to the amazing reviews it gets by critics and especially normal viewers. I started this film with very high expectations.
